Tire-slashing trial, finally, to start

It's disgusting that it has taken more than a year for the trial of those accused of slashing the tires of GOTV vans at Milwaukee Republican headquarters on election day 2004 to begin, though it is expected to today. As I wrote on election day, the slashing was wrong, and Democrats should have known better.

I am concerned that the evidence against the five men charged in the vandalism seems to be entirely circumstantial, but that is for the jury to sort out. If the police and the DA do indeed have the wrong people, then the investigation must continue, to ferret out those truly responsible.

By the way, for those of you convinced that this tire-slashing was just another data point in the overwhelming case against Democrats for election fraud and intimidation, you should be sure to read David Neiwert's election-day "Thug Watch," which monitored thuggery on both sides, including the tire-slashing in question today. Guess which side was thuggier? Hint: Not Democrats.
